The 143rd<\/sup> anniversary of the birth of Konrad M\u00e4gi was commemorated on 1 November with the opening of stands marking locations where he painted in Otep\u00e4\u00e4 and at Lake P\u00fchaj\u00e4rve.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Konrad M\u00e4gi visited Otep\u00e4\u00e4 in Southern Estonia on several occasions when he was summering at Lake P\u00fchaj\u00e4rve (1918\u20131920). M\u00e4gi often painted Lake P\u00fchaj\u00e4rve but he has also depicted the church at Otep\u00e4\u00e4 and the town\u2019s streets. Existential tones became more prominent in M\u00e4gi\u2019s oeuvre in this period. He perceived ever more tensions and sacredness in nature.<\/p>\n

The works on the stands at Otep\u00e4\u00e4 and Lake P\u00fchaj\u00e4rve are from the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and Viinistu Art Museum, and similarly from the Estonian Students\u2019 Society and from a private collection.<\/p>\n

The stands were set up in cooperation with the Otep\u00e4\u00e4 Rural Municipal Government on the corner of the intersection of Valga Highway and Tehvandi p\u00f5ik near the National Geographic yellow frame, and near the GMP P\u00fchaj\u00e4rve restaurant at the start of the beach promenade. Chairman of the Board of the Konrad M\u00e4gi Foundation Enn Kunila and the art historian Eero Epner spoke on site at the opening. Mayor of Otep\u00e4\u00e4 Rural Municipality Jaanus Barkala greeted attendees at the opening. The Otep\u00e4\u00e4 artist Reet Ohna also gave a speech. Kaidi Pajumaa, the director of creative matters for Otep\u00e4\u00e4 Kultuurikeskused [Otep\u00e4\u00e4 Cultural Centres], looked after the musical and verbal side of the opening, accompanied by Kristjan Luik on guitar.<\/p>\n

The Konrad M\u00e4gi Foundation erects stands to commemorate those important places in the Estonian landscape where outstanding works were painted by the painter Konrad M\u00e4gi. Stands have already been opened in Kuressaare and Kihelkonna Rural Municipality in Saaremaa, and on Vilsandi Island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
