On 12 March, Konrad Mägi – The Enigma of Painting, a sweeping exhibition of the works of early 20th century Estonian painter Konrad Mägi, opened at Kunstforeningen GL STRAND in Copenhagen.

Konrad Mägi. Norwegian Landscape with a Pine Tree. 1908–1910. Art Museum of Estonia
This large spring exhibition displays more than 70 works that underscore Mägi’s unique status in Estonian art. The retrospective was made possible in cooperation with the Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland and Kumu Art Museum, a branch of the Art Museum of Estonia.
The modernist Konrad Mägi (1878–1925) is the most outstanding figure of the golden age of Estonian painting and an unrivalled colourist whose distinctive-looking landscapes express the enigma and transcendent quality of natural world. Mägi long enjoyed relatively less international renown, but that is beginning to change. The exhibition at EMMA that preceded this one proved extraordinarily popular, drawing more than 50,000 visitors, and leading to an upwelling of interest in Mägi from the Finnish art-going public.
