Konrad Mägi arrived in Venice at the end of June 1922, possibly by train from Bologna: this can be concluded on the basis of entries in his sketchbook with indications of the departure times of both the day and night train. In Venice he is likely to have stayed in the big Hotel Cavalletto right behind St. Mark’s Square. He did not stay long there, only a little over a month, but he made numerous sketches, which served as the basis for eleven paintings, as far as we know. It is possible that some of them were completed on the spot, although a few weeks before his departure he admitted on a postcard that “unfortunately I have not completed a single thing.” He mainly worked around St. Mark’s Square and in its vicinity.
